Basic Desktop Security - Security is everyone's business. This online workshop will introduce various concepts relating to safe computing practices at MDC. As computing and networking has become an integral part of our daily work, it has become crucial to safeguard our computing resources. Topics included in the workshop range from your role and responsibilities as a network user to steps you can take to minimize risks to our computers and networks. Contact Eddy Martinez for more information.
Respondus is a tool for creating and managing exams that can be printed to paper or published directly to WebCT. Existing exams can be converted from eight different formats including word processor files. MDC has a site license for this product. See the Respondus Resource page for information. (The resource page is available from within the College only.)
Impatica - This application converts large PowerPoint files to a highly compressed file that can run on the Internet without
PowerPoint or a plug-in.
The College now has a site license for this desktop application that
makes it feasible to post animated and even narrated PowerPoint
presentations on the Web. For more information on how to get the
software and additional training, contact
Rhonda Berger. Elementk Online Learning for Microsoft products and other computer applications is available upon request. Contact Rolando Garcia for more information.

with users at MDC and elsewhere. MDC has a site license for Flashlight Online. If you are interested in using this to create online surveys for your classroom or department, see the
Flashlight Resource Page for more information. You can also register for a free webcast tutorial on how to use Flashlight. (The resource page is available from within the College only.)

Dr. Billy Jones, a faculty member in the College Prep Dept. at the Kendall Campus, wrote the article below.
My trip to the Vanguard/Learning College Conference
The Vanguard/Learning College Conference, which was held in Toronto, Canada (May 15-19), presented an opportunity for Miami Dade College (MDC) to explore the challenges and opportunities that community colleges are facing on a national and intercontinental level. MDC afforded select faculty, professional staff, and administrators the opportunity to a plethora of workshops that focused on making connections with students and the concept of creating “the learning college.”
As a young faculty member, this trip was a very special one for me, for it showed me how wonderful and advanced Miami Dade College really is; and at the same time, it offered me a chance to network with professionals like me, professionals that are enthusiastic, realistic, and concerned with students' academic achievements and professional success.
The four-day conference featured cross-discipline and subject-specific workshop sessions by facilitators who represented Canadian and American higher education institutions. I admired the diverse sessions. For instance, I was very pleased with a session titled “The Ontario College Writing Exemplars: Using Student Writing to Build Connections.” At this workshop, presenters discussed the need for colleges to present effective writing models for students to peer review and critique. These exemplars will serve as sample forms of writing that students can refer to as a resource guide in order to improve their own writing. In this workshop, there were a host of individuals who taught my subject and who seemed passionate about making significant changes to improve their programs. At the end of the dialogue, I left the session with a newfound appreciation for my subject and with an idea to bring back to MDC that would enhance the wonderful things that we do with our own developmental writing students.
Other notable sessions focused on evaluative techniques and alternative forms of assessment, institutional research techniques and analyses, and the role of the administration in the changing community college. These thematic approaches were tasteful and appealing to workshop delegates. In truth, I found it difficult to juggle my schedule for the conference, for there were workshops that were running in concurrent sessions that I wanted to attend. Fortunately, MDC was gracious to send approximately 10 delegates to the conference. This also afforded me the opportunity to interact with other professionals who work at MDC and who I do not see or work with on a consistent basis. This networking initiative also gave me new insight into what MDC is really about… putting and keeping students first.
In closing, the Vanguard Conference was beneficial for me in many ways. I networked with professionals, gained pedagogical insights, and expressed pertinent views. This experience reminded me that MDC is a truly wonderful place to work in. It reinforced the ideal that MDC is… and will always be… the number one community college in the nation. This is a title that many of our Canadian colleagues were most familiar with and respectful in mentioning to us. Through consistent dialogue and interaction, we work hard to keep MDC at this plateau. It is my hope that MDC will continue to sponsor and send other delegates to this wonderful, professional development experience.

Training in Action |
|
Fred Wolven, English Faculty at
Homestead Campus, recently began using Microsoft Publisher to
create flyers to advertise some course offerings. We asked
Professor Wolven to share some of his ideas for using the
desktop publishing tool for this month's Training in Action. |

Using
Microsoft Publisher
Having tried in not very polished ways to promote initial
offerings of specific classes (i.e., Creative Writing and some
Independent Study courses), I was struck by the range of
effective visual materials being produced during the Plan Your
Own Spring Break Seminar. Moving as I did from WebCT (the focus
of my work in the Seminar) into FrontPage wherein the idea
registered that with Publisher it would be possible to create
something to promote offerings. During Summer A, I took a
Publisher Basics session with Chris here at Homestead, acquired
the basic knowledge and skill and then fashioned a first series
of individual course flyers. I was caught by the
ease and speed with which I was able to fashion these using
Publisher. And they look professional too. I am, of course,
indebted to CT&D staff - especially Chris and Armando - and the
thoughtful and thorough service provided me. And, being
realistic, I now know I can continue learning and intend to
fashion even more polished promotion materials in future terms!
See Sample.
