The women of New York’s Urban Bush Women and the men of Senegal’s Compagnie Jant-Bi join together in this collaboration that explores the importance of landscapes and how we internalize them. The Scales of Memory bridges continents and cultures, depicting the contrasts between rural and urban life and delving into the African-American and African experience.
Urban Bush Women is a dance ensemble that engages a diverse audience by producing bold and life-affirming work based on women’s experiences, African-American history and cultural influences of the African Diaspora. Translated “sun” in the Senegalese language of Wolof, Jant-Bi is a modern dance group that partners with other world dance institutions to generate new forms of expression.
