Organic Gardens in the Community

Booker T. Washington Senior High School                                                                                                             2008-2009

Teachers Ms. Vicki Pollard and Ms. Nancy Beim

The Earth Ethics Institute Organic Gardens Project collaborated with students in Ms. Vicki Pollard and Ms. Nancy Beim’s class again this year!  Students planted a banana and papaya tree along with more tomatoes in their ring garden and collard greens in their small raised bed.  The students enjoy the time they get to work in the garden but the location of the garden, though convenient for the class, is very shady and so the garden has had minimal production.  As having an easy to access location is a top priority for this class, I think next year we will try to use plants that require less sun.

The Overtown Cookbook Project, an after-school program at Booker T. Washington Senior High, started a garden this fall.  They planted collard greens, onions, fennel, basil, lettuce and tomatoes.  They’ve organized a watering rotation to make sure that the garden gets watered everyday and they plan to use their vegetables in their cooking for the Fairchild Challenge this spring.

2007-2008

Students in Vicki Pollard and Nancy Beim’s class use produce from their school garden in the breakfast café they run each morning.  They expanded their garden this year, planting many more collard plants and some marigolds.  This class definitely gets the prize for most active use of their compost pile.  It was full of egg shells, orange and banana peels when we arrived!
