Medical Assisting (Vocational Credit Certificate)

Program Description

 This one year (3 semesters) program prepares students to provide allied health services in ambulatory out-patient facilities, including medical offices, clinics and hospitals. Medical Assistants participate in Diagnostic, Clinical, and Administrative functions.

Diagnostic functions include drawing blood, performing basic laboratory tests, and taking EKG’s and X-Rays. Clinical functions include obtaining vital signs, preparing patients for and assisting with examinations and procedures, administering medications and performing treatments. Administrative functions include diagnostic procedures, managing records, completing insurance coding, and providing for billing and collecting as well as serving as aa receptionist, scheduling appointments. Medical Assistants are taught computer applications to manage records, billing and other aspects of a medical office or clinic.

Students participate in an externship each semester to gain experience in every aspect of the Medical Assistant’s practice. Students can also choose to attend part-time and extend the length of the program to two (2) years.

This program starts every year in January, May, and August. The Medical Assistant program application deadlines are September 1, February 15, and May 1. Qualified applicants will be considered on a space available basis.

Program students are required to provide the results of a physical examination, immunizations for Rubella (German measles), Varicella (chicken pox), and Hepatitis B (or declination) and the results of a test for tuberculosis (TB) prior to beginning externship experiences. They must also be CPR certified before beginning externship. Students must have their own transportation to externship site in the community.

This program is offered only at Medical Center Campus located at 950 N.W 20 Street
Miami , Florida 33127 and clinical sites are throughout Dade County.

Successful completion of the MDC level two background check process or completion of a MDC nursing/health sciences program does not guarantee a graduate’s eligibility for participation in the professional credentialing process or for related employment. Credentialing agencies and health care employers may have additional eligibility criteria not required by an educational institution. Individuals who have been arrested or convicted of any felony crime during the last 15 years are strongly urged to inquire directly of the licensing board in the jurisdiction in which they intend to practice.
