The TABE Test
Test of Adult Basic Education
What is the TABE Test?
The State of Florida requires each educational agency offering Post-Secondary Adult Vocational Programs to administer an approved test to assess student mastery of basic skills
Minimum basic skills in Reading, Language, and Mathematics are defined for each vocational program. Students should consult vocational program advisors for information on basic skill grade levels required for specific programs. Students interested in police or fire science training programs should consult a program advisor for specific admissions and certification requirements. All students taking the TABE exam must complete battery forms 9 and 10 which measure basic skill levels for vocational programs.
Who must take the TABE?
All first-time-in program students who designate themselves as certificate-seeking in a program of 180 hours or more must complete an entry-level examination within the first six weeks of admission into the program.
All students whose TABE (or other approved examination) scores are more than two years old and have not been used for placement.
Who is exempted from TABE testing?
Students who have earned an AA degree or higher from an accredited institution are ordinarily exempted from testing except in specific situations such as certain programs sponsored by external funding agencies (law and fire enforcements).
Students who present SAT or ACT scores which exempt them from basic skills testing are exempt from testing for PSAV programs.
Students who pass the College Level Academic Skills Test (CLAST) are exempt from testing for PSAV programs.
Students who present official scores on any of the State-approved exams (including the CPT), which demonstrate the skill level required by the specific program. The scores must have been obtained within the past two years.
