 Dual Language Program

Academics- Honors Dual Language Inaugural group 2005

The Dual Language Program is a premier initiative of The Honors College at Miami Dade College. Located on the historic InterAmerican Campus, the Dual Language Program is being offered in response to recent studies showing bilingual ability to be a major contributor to increased cognitive, personal, and social development. Students immersed in an academic program in both English and Spanish will not only improve their proficiency in both languages but also increase their marketability in the workplace and expand the job opportunities available to them in the future. This program was launched in 2006 with it's inaugural class graduating in May 2008.

The program targets high-achieving students interested in multiple careers. Enrolled students pursue an Associates in Arts Degree majoring in subject areas offered at Miami Dade College. Students wishing to pursue a degree in Architecture, Art, Computer Animation, Graphic Design or Commercial Art & Music should contact the Director of the program, as certain course restrictions may apply.

In the Dual Language Program, the majority of the faculty are bilingual in English and Spanish. They are Latino or have lived and studied in countries outside the United States. Students demonstrate a respect and sensitivity to all the different countries represented by studying and sharing cultural experiences. Participation in study travel, National Model United Nations, and other conferences, along with academic presentations, cultural programming, and visits to art galleries and concert venues, enhance the awareness and appreciation of diverse cultures. Further, students work in small, interactive learning communities taught by professors who are experts in their fields, and these cooperative learning groups ensure collective cognizance.

Students in the Dual Language Program are students of The Honors College as such receive the Honors Fellows award in addition to any other financial aid for which they may qualify.

Graduates of the Dual Language program have received official notification of admission to some of the most prestigious universities in the nation, including American University, Bates College, Cornell, the University of California at Berkeley, Georgetown, George Washington University, Georgia Institute of Technology, Gonzola University, Mt. Holyoke, New York University, the University of Florida, and the University of Miami, among others. Students collectively performed over 1,000 community service hours providing services to the elderly, inner-city children, and crisis victims; environmental clean-ups; health walkathons; service for peace; fund-raising for Darfur, and other causes. In addition, students are leaders and members in a variety of organizations, including the Student Government Association; Phi Theta Kappa International Honors Society; Service for Peace; LIT Club; founders of the URBAN/A, the campus literary magazine; the Institute of Electrical Electronics Engineering and Computer Science Society; Psi Beta Psychology Honors Society; National Model United Nations; Chemistry Club; and “I Have A Dream Project,” a mentoring partnership between Dual Language students and students at an inner-city elementary school. Miami Dade College is extremely proud of this much needed innovative program.

I am an international student from Ecuador. It is amazing how The Dual Language Program has opened so many doors for me.  Not only am I exposed to lectures in my native language, but also encounter people from all over the world. I have been given the opportunity to travel abroad which helps me become a global student who is able to share her opinions and still be able to respect those of others. The program prepares us to become future leaders who will contribute to the world.”
