History

The Honors College History

The Honors College was founded to direct focused attention to a select group of high achieving students by providing a forum for intellectual collaborations. Made possible by the vision of Dr. Eduardo J. Padrón, College President, The Honors College is supported and promoted by the College leadership and is one of the priorities of the College. With a mission statement, scholarship budget and administrative appointments, The Honors College is fully institutionalized and is recognized as a genuine tradition of excellence.

In 2001, the Honors College at MDC was created as a separate College within the Miami Dade College system. An inaugural class of 75 students was admitted and in fall 2003, The Honors College expanded to include 75 new students at each of the Wolfson, North and Kendall campuses. This expansion allowed for greater accessibility to honors classes for students throughout the Miami Dade College system and the county. In the 2006 /07 academic year, the Dual Language Program, was launched. Only at the InterAmerican Campus, this program is designed for students who have oral and written proficiency in both English and Spanish and who may be interested in pursuing careers that demand literacy in both languages.

Since 2001, The Honors College continues to reach new heights and continues to receive accolades from national media publications, journals and educators. It is often host to colleges and universities seeking to mirror or model their Honor programs and upon invitation, The Honors College personnel are guest speakers and presenters at national meetings.
