Degree Offerings and Courses

Students enrolled in The Honors College (THC) are Associate in Arts degree seeking students. Click here for a list of degrees offered at Miami Dade College. Students working towards earning the Associate in Arts degree must complete a minimum number of 60 credits. Of these 60 credits, students in THC are expected to successfully complete at least 36 credits in honors designated courses. Students take an average of seventeen (17) credits per term of which a recommended requirement of nine (9) honors designated credits are completed each term. Honors College courses are only scheduled during the fall and spring terms. An array of approximately 26 different honors courses are offered on InterAmerican, Kendall, North, and Wolfson campuses each term.   Students are encouraged to take electives, participate in study-abroad or internships during the summer terms.

The curriculum in The Honors College is rigorous and challenging.  Students are engaged routinely learning to investigate, analyze, summarize, persist, practice discipline techniques, prioritize their time and seek help when necessary. Students enrolled in The Honors College upon graduation will demonstrate a mastery of the coursework by having fully comprehended the subject as evidenced by earned grades and the minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.5, as well as through the delivery of oral and/or written presentations.

The Honors College students with 36 honors credits and a 3.5 grade point average or higher are recognized as graduate of The Honors College with a special notation on the transcript and diploma.

Leadership Classes

Students graduating from The Honors College are expected to serve as leaders in their community. To enable them to attain the necessary skills, all students of THC are registered in an interdisciplinary Honors ‘Leadership’ course each semester. In these classes, IDH 1001, IDH 1002, IDH 2003 and IDH 2004, students learn various techniques to succeed in college and formulate a strategic plan for achieving their career goals.

Here is a comment from a former student about the Leadership classes.

Eric Sevillia

“The leadership classes really improved my organizational, presentation and public speaking skills. My professor Dr. Lenaghan was especially helpful when it came to transfer preparation. I will never forget the positive mentorship I received from this class (IDH 2003) and The Honors College staff”.
Comment by Eric Sevillia, Graduate of The Honors College attending the Stern School of Business at NYU with a double major in Economics and Finance.
