In 1996, the Federal Government passed the Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act (HIPAA). Part of the regulations in the Act became effective on April 14 th of this year, and have an impact on the use and disclosure of a person's private health information. In light of these new regulations, it is important to keep the following in mind:

  • Please remember to not discuss an employee's private health information with anyone (includes what benefit plan they are enrolled in).
  • Upon receipt of employee doctor's notes or any medical information regarding the employee please have the original hand delivered to a member of the Benefits staff immediately for retention in a separate employee file. Please do not retain a copy in your files.
  • If assistance is still needed after calling Member Services, please contact the Benefits Dept. of Human Resources at (305) 237-2010.  Employees requesting assistance, will be required to complete an authorization form to allow the insurance company to release the necessary information to the Benefits Dept.
