All students at MDC who are interested in becoming teachers or learning more about the teaching profession should come to the Career Center for the Teaching Profession located at IAP10 at the InterAmerican Campus, home of the School of Education. There you can obtain information on programs of study, meet with an advisor, and have all your questions answered. Although SOE advisement is available at North and Kendall campuses, the Career Center is the best location to obtain information and advisement.

When ready to apply for admissions to the baccalaureate programs (after completing 60 credits, possessing an AA degree including completion of all 36 credits of general education requirements) you must see SOE advisor who will review your degree audit and discuss time commitments. Only SOE advisors can register you for upper division courses.

In addition to MDC financial aid, you can apply for additional funds:

  • Florida TEACH grants for Early Childhood Education students- contact 237-2567:
    • This grant is offered through the Children’s Forum and must have the approval of the student’s employer for release time to take courses. For each year that monies are received through the grant, there is a year commitment to remain and teach at that center.

  • Federal TEACH grants for baccalaureate students- contact the financial aid office at MDC:
    • This grant requires a commitment of years teaching in a Title I school in a critical shortage subject area that corresponds to the number of years that the student receives the grant. Grants of up to $4000 per year are awarded. If the teaching commitment is not fulfilled, the grant reverts to a loan.

  • Florida Fund for Minority Teachers for baccalaureate students- contact your professor.
    • This grant requires a commitment of teaching equal to the number of years that the grant is received.
