Conference Day

The ePortfolio Title V staff will run a workshop at Miami Dade College Conference Day, March 2, 2006:

ePortofolio: A Meaningful Way to Reveal a Student's Learning Experience

In this presentation, participants will learn about ePortfolio from a theoretical standpoint and how it can be used to highlight evidence of a student's learning experience.

The first part of the session will cover concepts of portfolios such as how ePortfolios provide a context for learning and how they enrich learning experiences.

Participant will create a sample electronic portfolio to discover the tool's features and usability. During this hands-on exercise, faculty will be able to add artifact content items such as graphics and Word attachments.

Title V Co-op grant progress & successes

Implementing eportfolio at Miami Dade College – InterAmerican Campus has been an enriching experience for faculty and students.

Since the spring semester of 2003-2, twenty one MDC-IAC faculty from eleven disciplines have joined the grant, incorporating innovative instructional technologies in ePortfolios covering five academic areas.

Participating students have gained access to learning opportunities and have expressed satisfaction with instruction of subject matter. Student Carlota Nogera, whose ePortfolio was featured in the Higher Education Insert Series article of the Miami Herald, described her portfolio project as a “life-changing experience” while student Hector Sunol said, “The skills I picked up in the class will help me in finding a job”.

As of February 2006, ePortfolio Title V Co-op has received several inquiries from MDC faculty and administartors to adopt ePortfolios. The School of Business at IAC has expressed an interest in implementing e-portfolio throughout one of their business programs, and the Advisement Department requested the assistance of ePortfolio staff in establishing an ‘advisement ePortfolio’ that would include the MDC Individual Educational Plan for incoming students.

In an effort to curtail the cost of the ePortfolio platform and to ensure continued implementation of ePortfolios beyond the grant period, an in-house ePortfolio application has been developed to suit the technological and financial needs of our student body. Last semester, two professors have successfully piloted the new in-house system “eBuilder” with 46 MDC students. eBuilder is currently undergoing a second piloting phase, in which three additional professors and 94 students participate, paving the way to offering campus-wide eportfolio to MDC in the fall of 2006-1.

Most indicative of ePortfolio success today, is the need, challenging but essential to the project, to find creative ways to accommodate our growing number of faculty, students and staff with adequate equipment and support to continue bringing about positive results.
