| Children’s Awareness Month | |
| June 1- 30. A month-long celebration of America ’s children in our everyday lives and communities that lovingly remembers all of America ’s children that we have lost thought violence. These could have been our children or grandchildren. We choose to remember the living during this month of June by celebrating the gift of children. | |
| International Men’s Month | |
| June 1-30. This program was initiated in 1996 to increase media and local community awareness of the many unique issues that impact men’s lives and that are of concern to the people who love them. In an effort to promote positive changes in male roles and relationships, a different issue is addressed each day of the month during June. Web: www.menstuff.org | |
| Miami/Bahamas Goombay Festival | |
June 4-6. Miami , Fl. 28 th annual celebration of the black culture and heritage of Bahamian settlers in Miami ’s Coconut Grove area in the 1800s. Largest black heritage special event in the U.S. Annually the first full weekend in June. |

| D-Day: 60 th Anniversary | |
June 6, 1944. In the early morning hours Allied forces landed in Normandy on the north coast of France. In an operation that took months of planning, a fleet of 2,727 ships of every description converged from British ports from Wales to the North Sea. Operation Overlord involved 2,000,000 tons of war materials, including more than 50,000 tanks, armored cars, jeeps, trucks and half-tacks. The US alone sent 1,700,000 fighting men. The Germans believed the invasion would not take place under the adverse weather conditions of this early June day. But as the sun came up the village of Saint Mere Eglise was liberated an American parachutists, and by nightfall the landing of 155,000 Allies attested to the success of D-Day. The long-awaited second front had at last materialized. |

| June 14. Presidential proclamation issued each year for June 14. Proclamation 1335, of May 30, 1916 , covers all succeeding years. Has been issued annually since 1941. Customarily issued as “Flag Day and National Flag Week,” as in 1986; the president usually mentions “a time to honor America ,” Flag Day to Independence Day (89 Stat.211). Web: |
