Cataloging is the process
by which records for books, journals, audiovisual materials, etc.
that are owned by the InterAmerican Campus Library are created
and entered into the LINCC on-line catalog.
Every
title in our Library gets a separate record which contains the
material information plus extensive computer coding. This is called
the MARC record or Machine Readable Cataloging. Coding each element
in the record allows the user to search down to the smallest element
such as date, format, publisher, location in library, etc.
The
Library uses an outsource service to incorporate the records of
the new titles into the LINCC database. The services are provided
by Baker & Taylor that is also the main provider of literature
for our collection.
Other
providers are EBSCO, (mostly for serials), and the McNaughton Company for leased books. The materials
from these companies are received without a bibliographic record.
a Our staff searches the CCLA database
to locate the proper record or when there is no record the material
is sent to LTS at North Campus for cataloging.
The
magazines are collected as separate issues for six months or a
year. Those titles of permanent interest for the college are
sent to the bindery once or twice a year. The rest of the titles
are kept as unbound materials for two years.
