The Library encourages donations of useful materials provided
that:
•
the materials fit collection development criteria and
•
there are no unduly restrictive conditions attached. "Unduly restrictive
conditions" would, for example, seek to dictate the location
of materials within the Library or prevent the Library from
being free to dispose of any unneeded materials"
The
Library cannot legally or practically appraise gifts (e.g., for
tax or inheritance purposes).
The
responsibility for accepting gifts rests ultimately with the Faculty
Librarian.
Prospective
donors should be made aware that certain categories of materials
are unlikely to be added to the Library's collections and may
be donated elsewhere or discarded.
Types of gift materials the Library would be unlikely to keep:
•trade
paperbacks;
•self-help
or do-it-yourself books;
•condensed
books, study aids, textbooks;
•short
runs of research journals or nearly any popular journal;
•audiovisual
material employing old or non-familiar technology;
•any
material in such poor physical condition as to be beyond repair;
•duplicates
of titles already owned by the Library (unless in heavy demand);
•translations
into languages other than English;
•earlier
editions of titles owned by the library.
