LIS 2004 - INTRODUCTION TO INTERNET RESEARCH
Course Philosophy  

As society moves further into the information age, students are increasingly challenged by the explosion of digital information, and are particularly overwhelmed by the wealth and diversity of resources on the Internet.

In this environment it is critical that students acquire search skills to locate relevant information on the Internet, and develop the ability to evaluate the credibility of these resources.

These skills will be a crucial factor in students' achievement of academic, professional, or lifelong learning goals.

Performance Objectives  
Upon the successful completion of this distance education course, students will be able to:
  • Devise effective search strategies to effectively utilize Internet resources in the research process
  • Use the Internet to locate relevant research materials
  • Demonstrate competence in using keyword and Boolean search techniques as appropriate for Internet search tools
  • Use Internet utilities including Internet communication tools, web search engines, meta-search engines, subject trees, and distributed subject trees
  • Demonstrate an understanding of Internet terminology
  • Judge the relevancy and authority of Internet materials
  • Document Internet resources
This course is worth one (1) credit and students need no prerequisites to register in it. However, students planning to enroll in this course must possess minimum computer skills (know the basis of Microsoft Word, have worked before with computers, etc.).
