VETERANS ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
Eligibility Criteria for Veterans Upward Bound Program

The Veterans Upward Bound Program is a federally-funded project sponsored by Miami-Dade College.
 

The Goals and objectives of the project is to generate skills and motivation for success beyond high school among veterans. This includes providing intensive basic skills development, through the use of short term refresher courses, for veterans who are not high school graduates and those who have not completed or have delayed pursuing post secondary education.

To receive the tuition-free classes in English, arithmetic, algebra, reading, writing, and computers and to benefit from the tutoring, study skills training, career exploration, cultural and social activities, and assistance in obtaining Veterans Administration benefits, employment referrals, food stamps, bus passes, and financial aid information, each veteran must meet requirements mandated by the federal law.

 
 

The GUIDELINES for participation are set forth by the U.S. Department of Education, which stipulates that a participant must .

  • (1) Be a CITIZEN or national of the United States or
  • (2) Be a PERMANENT RESIDENT of the U.S.
  • (3) Be a FIRST GENERATION COLLEGE STUDENT
  • (4) Be an HONORABLY DISCHARGED VETERAN
  • (5) MEET THE INCOME LEVEL REQUIREMENT
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR TESTING AND INTERVIEW
 

All prospective participants must complete the Veterans Upward Bound Program APPLICATION PACKAGE and submit it for review and approval.

The following DOCUMENTS must be provided

  • The DD-214: to indicate veteran's status and honorable discharge.
  • High School Diploma or G.E.D. Certificate, or transcripts: to establish the level of education achieved.
  • Federal Income Tax Return or Notarized Statement: to prove income level.
  • A Picture I. D. and Social Security Card: for identification and work status.
  • A Treatment Plan (if applicable).
Participants must also agree:
 
to attend all classes and Veterans Upward Bound functions.
(if applicable) to be sober and clean for a minimum of six (6) months(documented) with a sponsor or enrolled in a rehabilitation program for a minimum of four (4) months with a counselor and/or sponsor who will give their recommendations, in writing. Additionally, all applicants in this category must be involved in the Twelve Step Program or be involved in a similar support group with periodic tests to insure sober and clean status.
 
  All applications should be submitted as quickly as possible to ensure that they will be will be processed in a time for the beginning of classes.
