GUIDELINES AND PROCEDURES
1. Students requesting support services must see an advisor in
ACCESS Disability Services before registering for classes. In order
to arrange for services, please see your advisor at least 10 days
prior to the first day of class. Students who register first will
get the first consideration in choice of support services. Students
who register with another Deaf/hard of hearing student will also
have extra consideration. Your schedule will be made mandatory at
the time of registration (this means that you must see your advisor
in the event you wish to withdraw from one of your classes or make
changes to your schedule). You must have a paid schedule in order
to insure that you will get your support services!
2. Please make every effort to be on time for your classes. Interpreters,
captionists, and note takers will wait 20 minutes for you to arrive
after class has begun. Note takers will begin taking notes when you
arrive, so BE ON TIME. Interpreters/captionists will not summarize
what happened in class before you arrive.
3. You should exchange names and phone/beeper numbers with your
interpreters, captionists, and/or note takers. If you will be late
or absent, please contact them 12 hours in advance of your class.
4. Missing class is the number one reason for student failure in
college! If you HAVE to be absent, you must also notify the ACCESS
Disability Services Office 12 hours in advance at (305) 237-2767
or bring in a doctor's note. An unexcused absence is any absence
without 12 hours advanced notice. After the third unexcused absence,
your interpreting, note taking, and tutoring services will be suspended.
Reinstatement of services will only occur after you are counseled
by the ADS office.
5. If your services are suspended and you would like them reinstated,
you must do the following:
a. Meet with your instructor and write down what you need to do
to pass the course. Have them sign it with their telephone extension
or a phone number where they can be reached.
b. Make an appointment to meet with the Director of ACCESS Disability
Services. Bring the paper from your instructor to the meeting.
c. Agree to come to the ADS office (or other designated location)
10 minutes before your regularly scheduled class time to meet your
interpreter/captionist for the rest of the semester, OR: call/beep
your interpreter/captionist to let them know you are on your way
to class (the exact time to be determined by the interpreter, based
on his/her situation).
6. Make sure you have note taking paper with you at all times. If
your note taker or captionist is late or absent, you can have a classmate
take notes on the carbonized paper as a backup. Paper is available
in the ADS Office.
7. If your interpreter/captionist is absent (without notifying
you), contact the ADS office-but DO NOT SKIP CLASS. We will try
to arrange for a substitute. If it is impossible to get a sub, bring
a tape recorder to your class (you can check out a tape recorder
from the Media Center's AV office on the second floor of the library).
Drop the tape off in the ADS office and someone will transcribe
the tape and email it to you (or give you the paper transcription)
as soon as possible. OR: give several students in the class note
taking
paper. This will give you more complete notes. (What one student
leaves out, another student may have written down). If possible
schedule an appointment with your instructor and ask if s/he can
give you a copy of his/her notes and review what you may have
missed.
8. You will be asked to sign time cards for the interpreters/captionists,
note takers and tutors. Please check to make sure that the information
on the time card is accurate. Do not sign blank time cards.
9. Let us know if you have any problems with your interpreters,
captionists, or note takers as soon as possible. Refer to the Policies
and Procedures for Interpreters/Captionists and Note takers for information
concerning their role and function.
10. Any personal conversations you have with your interpreter/captionist
should be held before or after class or during break times.
11. If you need tutoring, explanations, assistance with classwork,
or translation of printed material, please do not ask your interpreter/captionist
or note taker for help. Ask your teacher or contact the ADS office
for help. We can provide tutors (including tutors who are Deaf)
or interpreters/captionists for you in the labs.
I am requesting the following support services. I have read and
agree to follow the college's Guidelines and Procedures for Deaf
and hard of hearing students in using these supports-as a part of
my responsibility and commitment to my educational program.
