Dr. Ray Greek
Animals in Research in 2005
In his lecture, Dr. Ray Greek will discuss the use of animals in research designed to find cures for human disease. He will focus on the ethics of animal use as it pertains to the humans it is supposed to help. In other words: Animals-based research from a humanist perspective. The lecture will be for the nonscientist but scientists will appreciate many of the points.
|
Dr. Ray Greek is president of Americans For Medical Advancement and Europeans For Medical Advancement, not-for-profit organizations dedicated to educating the public about the hazards of extrapolating the results of experiments on animal models to humans. Dr. Greek and his wife have written several books on this topic, the proceeds from which go to AFMA (www.curedisease.com) a 501c3.
Dr. Greek has shown not only that animal experiments are unnecessary, but also that they have resulted in both direct and indirect harm to humans. Thus these expensive and unreliable animal models have been harmful to humans. He effectively argues that the money currently going to fund animal experiments should be designated for other historically more productive and scientific means of health/biomedical research.

Ms. Breelyn MacDonald
Why Vegetarian?
Designed to be educational, rather than persuasive, Ms. MacDonald provides students with an alternative perspective that promotes critical thinking. Students are exposed to the many reasons why 6 million Americans have chosen this lifestyle; such as the environment, health and nutrition, world hunger, and human and animal welfare. Also discussed are legal controversies revolving around the animal agriculture business. The presentation offers students a refreshing choice, one that is strongly supported by the American Dietetic Association.
