REA 0001
College Preparatory Reading
Catalog Description:
REA 0001 is a college preparatory reading course which builds vocabulary
skills, literal and critical comprehension skills, and successful
reading strategies. Lab required. Special fee. 4 credits
Prerequisites: CPT score of 26 -50.
Course Competencies:
Competency 1:
The student will build vocabulary skills by
| a. using the dictionary |
| b. defining words through word analysis |
| i. prefixes |
| ii. suffixes |
| iii. roots |
| c. using context clues |
| d. increasing word knowledge through memorization
and application |
Competency 2:
The student will build literal comprehension skills by
| a. recognizing stated main ideas |
| i. topics |
| ii. topic
sentences |
| b. identifying major and minor supporting details |
| c. identifying relationships within and between
sentences |
| d. recognizing patterns of organization |
Competency 3:
The student will build critical comprehension skills by:
| a. making inferences |
| b. recognizing implied main ideas |
| c. drawing conclusions |
Competency 4:
The student will build successful reading strategies by:
| a. following written and oral directions |
| b. paraphrasing materials |
Pending approval of the Academic Deans

** Students may be required to pay the full cost of instruction
in order to retake REA 0001. An appeal of this higher fee will be
considered for extenuating circumstances determined by the College
to be exceptional and beyond the control of the student.
The consequences of academic dishonesty can range
from receipt of a failing grade for the course to expulsion from
MDC. Students should familiarize themselves with the handbook, Student's
Rights and Responsibilities, which can be obtained from Student Life,
Room 8201.
