1) First you apply for admission to the
College:
It is probably a good idea to apply for admissions at the
Campus you are interested in attending. Click here to see how to get
to any of our
MDC campuses. To apply
for admission ONLINE, OR to complete and submit an
admission application. All new college credit students pay $20
non-refundable admission application processing fee. You will pay
this fee when you submit the application.
2) Now determine if you need the English as a
Second Language for Academic Purposes (EAP) Program:
If you have a documented score of 550 on the paper/pencil
Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or a 213 on the computerized
TOEFL taken on or after 7/1/98, you do not need to take the EPT test
and/or complete the EAP courses. In this case you will take the Computerized Placement
Test (CPT) (reading, writing, and math) and begin your career courses. You can
find out how to prepare for the CPT test at this
WebSite.
3) If you have not passed the TOEFL, and IF you are a
degree-seeking student, you will take a placement test for
degree-seeking students with limited English proficiency, the English
Placement Test (EPT) and be placed in the designated English as a Second
Language for Academic Purposes (EAP) course. The EPT, or Michigan test, is
a paper and pencil test which measures skills in reading vocabulary,
reading comprehension, grammar, and listening comprehension. Students may
also be required to write a short essay and will meet with an advisor
prior to placement.
Good News: Once you are admitted into the EAP Program, you become a regular MDC student, and
there is no need to reapply in order to begin taking career courses after you
finish your English.
4) After you take the EPT, you will meet with an
advisor on one of the 6 campuses to be placed in the appropriate level
within the EAP program according to your score on the test:
