Editor’s
Note:
Last
year’s issue of Miambiance won more awards than any year in
the past, and some have said it would be nearly impossible to do
better. I disagree. If issue twelve set the bar, then it is up to
us to raise it.
Included here for the first time are the winners of the One Book,
One Community college-wide writing contest. The book chosen for
community reading in 2002 was Sandra Cisneros’, The House
on Mango Street. The contest required entrants to write vignettes
in the author’s style. Each campus chose their own winners,
but ultimately each piece was published at the discretion of our
fiction staff.
Speaking of the staff...
Many of the contributors featured in this magazine also worked on
the staff. It is a strict policy of Miambiance that submissions
from the staff be entered with the highest level of anonymity. That
said, any student who worked on the staff and was also published
should feel proud. This accomplishment is an attribute to your dedication
and by no means an act of favoritism within the magazine.
Not to take anything away from last year's group, but having worked
on both issues, I can't help but feel like this year's staff was
more enthusiastic and more cohesive than the last. We got to know
one another, and after the National College Media Convention in
Orlando, some of us may know more than we care to mention. Nevertheless,
I'm sure you'll agree this staff has put together the most impressive
collection of visual art yet, while the compelling pieces of poetry
and prose cater to all tastes ranging in content from the innocence
of children to the vices of adulthood.
Finally, I feel I should mention that some of the pieces may be
viewed as offensive due to their explicit content or powerful imagery,
but keep in mind that once an artist is censored, his work ceases
to be art. The purpose of Miambiance is to expose the unique culture
here in Miami. Every piece is a reflection of the mores in our society,
whether positive or negative. Our staff and contributors, all students,
range in age from 16 to refuse-to-say; and their cultural backgrounds
are just as varied. So keep an open mind and enjoy. This is issue
number thirteen.
