TABE - Test of Adult Basic Education

The State of Florida requires each educational agency offering Post-Secondary Adult Vocational Programs to administer an approved test to assess student mastery of basic skills. Minimum basic skills in Reading, Language, and Mathematics are defined for each vocational program. Students should consult vocational program advisors for information on basic skill grade levels required for specific programs. Miami-Dade College administers the Tests of Adult Basic Education (TABE) Survey Forms 7 and 8 to measure basic skill levels for vocational programs.

Miami-Dade College (MDC) requires students enrolled in Post-Secondary Vocational Certificate Education programs of 450 hours or more to take the Tests of Adult Basic Education (TABE) to demonstrate mastery of basic skills. Depending on the Vocational Credit Certificate program, MDC administers the TABE Complete Battery or Survey, Level A, Forms 7 and 8 (Corrections, Fire, Law Enforcement, and Medical programs currently use the Complete Battery).

The TABE measures skills in reading, language usage, and mathematics. The test is available in two formats: computer administered and paper and pencil. TABE scores are valid for two years. Agencies sponsoring Vocational Credit Certificate seeking students may set higher requirements and exemptions for testing.

The Associate in Science nursing programs at MDC also require the TABE for admission into their credit programs. Students interested in the nursing credit programs should consult with a nursing program advisor for specific admissions requirements.

Retests are permitted following remediation. A minimum of 30 days must elapse between initial testing and retesting or between retests.

*Students who take the TABE before the 30-day period has elapsed will have their test invalidated and no scores will be reported.
