ABSTRACT:

In this project we will develop seven ultrasound centers in which students will be assigned to perform and assess various ultrasound examinations. They will then complete written reports on the pathologies they encountered, and submit these to a virtual radiologist for review and feedback. This will be based on the program used to develop the virtual midwifery practices.

PROJECT SUMMARY: This project created five virtual ultrasound practices. There are 12 cases that students may study. Each case has objectives to guide the student, labs, CT scans, X rays, interventions, pathology reports, ultrasounds, vocabulary and reference materials. At the end of the case, the student is asked to answer questions related to the case. These are submitted on line and the answers are then viewed by the faculty in the administrative page. The project can be assigned to individual students outside the classroom or used in the classroom as a part of group work.

The cases were provided by the Philips Medical Systems, and written permission from Robert Carter, Executive Producer On-Line Education, was obtained to use the cases, related materials and all visuals. Credit was given in each case.

Evaluation will occur this term in the classroom with students in an ultrasound class.
PROJECT RESULTS:

Using a case study format, the learning exercises in this program present clinical information regarding various pathologies. By reviewing the patient's medical history, lab results, and the results of several diagnostic imaging modalities, the learner will examine the characteristics of these pathologies. Not only does the student learn about the ultrasound findings associated with the pathology, but these findings are correlated with the findings of other imaging modalities.
These case studies illustrate the unique information that each imaging modality, clinical exam, or test contributes to the diagnostic conclusion.
