Alumnus Leads S. Miami Police Department

Robert F. Richardson II is yet another example of how Miami Dade College can catapult careers. Recently Richardson was appointed acting chief of the City of South Miami Police Department.
He is responsible for the overall operations of the department, including the K-9 unit, the motor squad, community patrol, the honor guard and the reserve officer program.
A Miami native and 21-year veteran of the department, Richardson has held key positions in his hometown police agency in the areas of patrol, narcotics, crime suppression, criminal investigation, community patrol and special weapons and tactics (SWAT). He has proven himself a highly skilled and dedicated professional.
Richardson earned his associate degree in criminal justice from MDC and went on to receive his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in public administration.
“My experience at MDC was nothing less than gratifying after being out of school for more than 25 years,” Richardson said. “It was a starting point for advancing my career as a supervisor to the next level. Had it not been for MDC, I would not be in the key position of heading up the South Miami Police Department as the chief of police.”
Richardson is a state certified police instructor and a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, Florida Association of Chiefs of Police, Miami-Dade County Association of Chiefs of Police, the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives and the City of South Miami’s Martin Luther King Committee.
