Walmart grant brings brighter futures to the unemployed

Walmart Foundation awarded the College a coveted spot in its Brighter Futures Project and $336,500 to equip workers with 21st-century job skills and a fast track to employment.

“The Walmart Brighter Futures Project is another avenue through which Miami Dade College will stimulate the local economy,” said Dr. Donna L. Jennings, dean of workforce education and development at MDC.

“The College is committed to serving the community by delivering effective workforce training opportunities to those who need to increase their knowledge and expand their employment skills.”

The national project is funded through a $3.5 million grant from the Walmart Foundation to work with a select group of colleges through the League for Innovation to develop programs and services to put displaced workers back to work. Those institutions, in turn, will serve as models for other colleges facing similar needs.

“Increasing the knowledge base of our community contributes to its economic development,” Jennings said.
