Examining medical fraud
Students at the MDC Medical Center Campus had a unique opportunity recently to meet with U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius. They participated in an all-day session that brought together health officials from the local, federal and state levels, prosecutors and investigators, and representatives of both beneficiaries and providers to discuss possible solutions to the growing problem of Medicare and Medicaid abuse.
The students learned how providers prevent health care fraud, how false billing is a national problem and how law enforcement can tackle Medicaid abuse more effectively. The summit came at a time when the national Medicare Fraud Strike Force announced its largest takedown since 2007. The team charged 94 people across major cities for allegedly submitting more than $251 million dollars in false claims.
