Miami Dade College is leading the charge in service-learning opportunities. Piloting students through these enhanced learning experiences that impart civic responsibility and strengthen communities are MDC’s outstanding faculty, including Miriam Del Campo, a biology professor at the Kendall Campus who recently was selected as the winner of the 2011 Florida Campus Compact (FCC) Service-Learning Faculty Award in the Florida college sector.
This practical approach to education through hands-on training in socially conscious issues is hailed as the most direct avenue for students to acquire and immediately use course materials in a significant and meaningful way.
“My role as a professor is to guide and mentor students as they progress through their educational journey with values and with the conviction that we can influence opinions and policies with a strong commitment to worthwhile causes,” said Del Campo, a 22-year educator at MDC.
A firm believer that every student has the potential to learn and apply information to make a difference in society and has a role in the sustainability of life on Earth, Del Campo said, “Service-learning is a win-win situation for all concerned.”
MDC students can get involved in a variety of service-learning projects in the science and health-related fields for organizations such as the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Everglades National Park, Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park, Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, and several schools and hospitals throughout Miami-Dade County.
