Alumnus: MDC Opens Doors
Honors College alumnus Daniel Cabrera is now a pre-med senior at Columbia University.
Daniel Cabrera, a Miami Dade College graduate and now a pre-med senior at Columbia University, says there is a difference between an MDC student and an Ivy League one. But it’s not academic.
“It is the amount of opportunities given to them,” said the North Campus Honors College graduate. “MDC gave me the opportunity to attend college when no other school did.”
Cabrera was part of Bridges to the Future, a collaborative program between The Honors College at Miami Dade College and the University of Miami. Bridges to the Future gives students from a group underrepresented in the sciences the opportunity to do research and attend lectures in biotechnology starting the summer after freshman year.
“The Honors College at MDC gave me an advantage when applying for competitive medical internships,” Cabrera said.
The next summer Cabrera interned at Washington University in St. Louis, researching zinc and how it is maintained in the body. He returned there last summer to continue the project.
“I have always felt prepared for my endeavors because I made the best of the opportunities MDC gave me,” Cabrera said.
