A Doctor in the Making
Alexandra Mayard always dreamed of being a doctor just like her pediatricians in Haiti. Now, the graduate of The Honors College at Miami Dade College is a third-year medical student at Temple University.
“I have always worked hard and gone wherever I could to make my dream happen,” Mayard said. “Starting my college career at MDC definitely has helped me get to where I am.”
One of the hardest things for her, at first, was adjusting to a new culture in a new country away from her parents in Haiti.
“MDC helped to make the transition easier,” she said. “There were smaller classes; the advisors were always there for me; and my teachers were amazing.”
Now Mayard works rotations in Philadelphia, spending four to eight weeks in each medical specialty while trying to narrow down which specialty to pursue.
Whatever she chooses, all her hard work has been toward one goal.
“I want to heal people,” she said.
