A Regal Visit
![]() Queen Sofía of Spain |
Her Majesty Queen Sofía of Spain recently visited MDC’s historic Freedom Tower to meet with more than 400 community leaders. Joining her was Spanish Ambassador to the U.S. Jorge Dezcallar.
Queen Sofia’s visit is particularly symbolic since MDC’s Freedom Tower is a treasured place for Hispanics, especially the hundreds of thousands of Cuban exiles who were processed in its rooms in the 1960s and early ’70s. A National Historic Landmark constructed in the Spanish Mediterranean Revival architectural style, the Freedom Tower contains design elements borrowed from the famous Giralda Tower in Seville, Spain. The Map Room at the Freedom Tower, where the Queen’s reception took place, contains a mural depicting a meeting in the New World between Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de León and a Tequesta chief.
