Making Their Mark

Nursing Faculty Lead the Profession

The Medical Campus at Miami Dade College is one of the area's most prestigious training arenas for highly skilled nurses. Its School of Nursing provides the region with an impressive workforce that occupies key positions at not only the local and national levels but also abroad. Playing equally visible roles throughout our community, both as instructors and leaders, are many of the School's faculty and associates.

Such is the case with School of Nursing instructors Dr. Lenora Yates, Nahomie Mirville and Dr. Yamina Alvarez, along with Dr. Patricia Messmer, who serves as a consultant to the School. Each of these outstanding women has been newly elected to leading posts in four different prestigious professional associations.

Dr. Yates, a School of Nursing senior faculty member, is chair of the Generic Nursing program and was recently elected president of the Miami Chapter – Black Nurses Association Inc. through 2014.

Mirville, an MDC alumna and assistant professor in the nursing program, was also elected recently as president of the Haitian American Nurses Association of Florida (HANA) until 2013.

Dr. Alvarez is an associate senior professor at the School and is now also president of the National Hispanic Nurses Association – Miami Chapter (NHNA) until 2014.

Dr. Messmer, a consultant for the School of Nursing, currently is serving as chair of the Nurses Charitable Trust — the only nurseintegrated philanthropic group in the United States. She also serves on the American Nurses Association (ANA) Nominating Committee, of which she will become chair this June. Messmer also serves as a member of the American Nurses Association Political Action Committee (ANA-PAC) Leadership Society.

"At MDC, we are extremely fortunate to have such a distinguished group of individuals preparing our future nurses and contributing to the community and their profession," said Medical Campus President Dr. Armando Ferrer.
