For more than eight decades, broadcast journalism has brought the people, places and events that shape our lives right into our homes. Now through an innovative new partnership with the educational arm of NBC, Miami Dade College will tap into thousands of digitized stories to significantly enhance learning resources for the College’s students, faculty and staff.

“Imagine being in an anatomy class and seeing live coverage of the first open-heart surgery,” said Rhonda Berger, MDC’s technology training director of College Training and Development. “Or picture students in an English conversation class watching former President Reagan’s plea to Gorbachev to 'Tear down this wall’ while simultaneously reading the transcript of that famous speech to increase their comprehension.”

Massive Archives

Starting this fall, NBC Learn will provide these types of real-world learning experiences by drawing upon the award-winning resources of the NBC News archives, including more than 12,000 three- to six-minute video clips, as well as documents, images and other resources specifically designed for classroom use.

Generous support from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, The Miami Foundation and the Marlins Foundation make this invaluable resource available to the entire MDC community through the College's portal, learning management system and library databases.

Enriching the Curriculum

In addition to the information available to students and staff, MDC faculty will have access to primary source materials, lesson plans, classroom planning resources and supplemental text and images from NBC’s content partners.

“Along with both Notre Dame and Pennsylvania State University, Miami Dade College is fortunate to be among a select handful of U.S. institutions that are piloting the use of the exciting resources now made available through NBC Learn,” said MDC President Dr. Eduardo J. Padrón. “This is a wonderful, one-of-a-kind opportunity.”
