A Dazzling Homecoming
New Miami City Ballet Artistic Director Lourdes López returns to Miami to become the first Latina director of a major U.S. dance company.
Miami Dade College and dancers from MDC’s New World School of the Arts recently welcomed incoming Miami City Ballet Artistic Director Lourdes López, center. The reception at MDC’s National Historic Landmark Freedom Tower was an emotional homecoming for López, who first visited the Freedom Tower as a child when her mother, like thousands of other immigrants, sought support at “El Refugio.” Having danced with the world-renowned New York City Ballet, she returns to Miami as the first Latina director of a major U.S. dance company. Joining her at the event is Rafi Maldonado-López, center left, who teaches at New World School of the Arts and the Miami City Ballet School.
