Making Their Mark

Student Literary Magazines Shine

Student literary magazines from almost every campus dominated the Florida College System Press Association awards, including a Division A first-place finish for Hialeah Campus’ Café Cultura magazine for the fourth year in a row.

“We were surprised to win again because the magazines in this year’s competition were numerous and they were all beautiful,” said Café Cultura co-adviser Ivonne Lamazares about the publication once again receiving top honors.

Café Cultura won a total of 10 awards, including six first-place honors. In addition, editor-in-chief Bianca Rodríguez was honored with the Debra Vázquez Memorial Poetry Award.

Miambiance (Kendall Campus) and AXIS (North Campus) tied for second place in Division B; Metromorphosis (Wolfson Campus), finished in third place in Division B; Estuaries (Homestead Campus) tied two for third place in Division A.

MDC students who contributed to the publications, including InterAmerican Campus’ online publication Urbana, also won 13 first-place awards and nearly two dozen second- and third-place awards in separate categories, including fiction writing, nonfiction, poetry, photography, art works, editing, cover design, contents and staff page and overall design.

National Honors

MDC’s student literary magazines also had resounding success in the national Community College Humanities Association awards, where Miambiance and Café Cultura took first and third place, respectively, in the Southern Region Division, among several other awards in individual categories.

The two magazines also placed in several categories in the Columbia Scholastic Press Association national Gold Circle Awards, including a first-place finish by Miambiance writer Walter Guevara for a non-fiction article.
