Making Their Mark

TRIO Bestows Awards on MDC Duo

Earning acclaim for their hard work, MDC North Campus alumna Danyelle Carter and TRIO Student Support Services Director Carlton Daley recently
received awards at the fourth annual TRIO Tri-State Conference in Atlanta.

TRIO programs are federally funded initiatives providing counseling and support designed to help disadvantaged students get to and succeed at college. The programs serve more that 800,000 students nationally, at close to 1,400 colleges and universities.

The awards recognize the achievements of exceptional TRIO students and staff who help those students navigate the sometimes challenging waters of getting a college education.

Carter, who graduated from MDC in 2011, received the 2014 Florida Alumni Achiever award from the Florida Association of Educational Opportunity Program Personnel. Her many activities at MDC included writing for MDC’s student newspaper The Reporter, working as public relations director for the North Campus Student Government Association and serving as District 1 president for the Florida College System Student Government Association.

Currently a student at Spelman College, Carter is public relations manager for The Blue Print, Spelman’s student newspaper. The ambitious MDC graduate is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in English and communication with a concentration in public relations.

Daley was presented with the 2014 Tri-State Presidential Award. His distinguished career helping students includes serving as associate director of TRIO Educational Talent Search and working at Upward Bound Programs at Florida International University. He has directed MDC’s North Campus TRIO Student Support Services Program since 2006.

“Accolades like this speak volumes about the caliber of students and staff at our institution,” said North Campus President Malou C. Harrison. “MDC’s TRIO Program excels at placing ‘students first’ with ample supports and interventions that promote student achievement.”
