Ready to take on an exciting new leadership role, MDC School of Education student John Alvarez has been elected state president of the Florida Future Educators of America (FFEA), where he will represent the student voice in educational policy matters for the Florida Department of Education and actively promote teaching as a career. Having served as president of the MDC Wolfson Campus Chapter of FFEA, he is well prepared for the challenges ahead.

Paying It Forward

Alvarez, who just completed his junior year with a 3.72 cumulative GPA, is close to completing a bachelor’s degree in exceptional student education at MDC. His future plans include working as a professor at MDC.

“As someone who was born and raised in Miami, and who is the product of a Florida education, it is an honor to represent Miami Dade College and all students and future teachers throughout the state,” Alvarez said.
“I look forward to helping improve the state of education in Florida.”

Last year, Alvarez was selected as one of five MDC students representing the College at the 2013 Harvard Latino Leadership Initiative, an intensive leadership development program hosted by the Harvard Kennedy School at Harvard University. He also hones his skills working as an administrative coordinator at MDC’s Law Center.

An Active Leader

In addition to his academic work, Alvarez is involved in Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society for Education, Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society, Sigma Alpha Pi Leadership Honor Society and Delta Lambda Phi International Social Fraternity.

He has volunteered more than 4,200 hours of community service during his lifetime and is a recipient of the 2013 President’s Lifetime Call to Service Award.
