Powerful Partnerships

Keeping the Nation Secure

It’s wheels up on an innovative program that pairs MDC expertise with the United States Transportation Security Administration (TSA). The collaboration came about when the TSA, which partners with selected colleges throughout the country, reached out to MDC to provide advanced training for its employees in South Florida.

“We offer a slate of five courses in our Homeland Security Certificate program,” said Kenneth Staab, chair of the MDC School of Justice. “The same courses and certificate are available to MDC students, but due to the concerns of the TSA, their employees study in their own cohort, so they can exchange information freely.”

The coursework covers intelligence analysis, transportation and border security, and many other critical topics. Beyond the curriculum itself, one of the major benefits to the TSA comes through collaboration. Employees from different areas of the agency – for instance, airport officers and cargo inspectors – are able to share information. This gives the participants a broader view of  TSA’s operations and helps the agency fulfill its institutional goals.

“The TSA is important to all of us today. The whole concept of traveling carefree is all changed, and we are touched by security today more than ever,” Staab noted.

Another impact on the program is that it opens avenues to continued education for the TSA students.

“Many of these people may not have been in a classroom for a while,” Staab said. “After completing this program, the hope is they will continue their college careers at MDC, or even continue to advanced or professional degrees.”
