The Shark Surge

Jubilation filled MDC’s commencement ceremonies this spring when close to 15,000 graduates received diplomas in five celebrations.

The joy peaked as four MDC students graduating with associate degrees learned they had been selected from thousands nationwide to receive the Jack Kent Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship to use toward their bachelor’s degrees. Through the years, 18 MDC students have received this honor,  making MDC a top producer in the nation.

In addition, members of MDC’s District Board of Trustees presented $5,000 scholarships to top graduates from each campus.

As in past MDC ceremonies, where graduates have heard inspiring words from world leaders such as Presidents Bush, Clinton and Obama, this year’s attendees were urged to improve the world by the motivational messages of the keynote speakers.

Commencement Speaker Words of Wisdom

Dr. William Adams
Chairman, National Endowment for the Humanities
Hialeah and Wolfson campuses

“In so many ways, your college is a leader in showing our nation how we respond to challenges of the world, to the demographic change of globalization, the pressures and promises brought about by technological progress and innovation. … We need citizens who are capable of building community out of difference. You are those citizens. And what you learned here at Miami Dade will be crucial to our success as a country.”

Katherine Archuleta
Director, U.S. Office of Personnel Management
North Campus and MDC-West

“As you take your next steps into your life’s journey, I again urge you to follow your passions. Make sure you bring a sense of purpose to whatever you do. And know that your character will be shaped not just by what you do, but by whom you stand with and how you treat others. … I predict that with the foundation that has been laid for you – at home with your families and here at
Miami Dade – that sitting here today you can’t even imagine the heights you will reach, the contributions you will make and the glorious future you will have.”

Frank Del Río
Chairman and CEO, Norwegian Cruise Lines Holdings Ltd.
Homestead and InterAmerican campuses

“As Miami Dade College graduates and with the Magic City as your home, you’re beginning your career journey in one of the most dynamic and prosperous cities in the world. You are very lucky. Over the past few decades – and thanks in large part to Miami Dade graduates of years past – Miami has grown from a city known for beaches and retirees to being a gateway to Latin America, to being a massive hub of global trade and commerce. … With your innovations, foresight and resolve, I can only imagine what a remarkable place Miami will be after you’re done with it.”

Miguel “Mike” Fernández
Chairman and CEO, MBF Healthcare Partners
Kendall Campus

“Adversities are important in life. It is not the success. Life is not fair. You will find obstacles where you least expect them. But you have options in how you handle them. Your drive and your brain can take you from fairness to relevance. Greatness appears to you when you overcome adversity. … Failures and adversity are a necessary companion on the road to success.”

Dr. William E. Truehart
President and CEO, Achieving the Dream Inc.
Medical Campus

“Miami Dade has created a rich college culture that is deeply committed to student success. … You have been fortunate to have the opportunity to earn Miami Dade credentials, and I assure you that your education at Miami Dade College will serve you well throughout your careers. Although I must say that with the privilege of becoming a graduate of Miami Dade, you have a responsibility – a lifelong responsibility – and that is the responsibility of giving back.”
