MDC Medical Campus’ Health Information Technology program was selected to nominate students for the inaugural 2015 Siemens Technical Scholars program (STS) by the Aspen Institute College Excellence Program (CEP) and the Siemens Foundation. Two MDC students were also awarded scholarships as part of the selection.

“We are extremely proud of this recognition, not only because it highlights one of our exemplary and innovative programs but especially because it translates directly to scholarship dollars for our students,” said Dr. Lenore Rodicio, MDC provost of Academic and Student Affairs.

Supporting STEM Skills

The STS selection committee identified exemplary programs from top colleges such as MDC that deliver exceptional training for middle-skill science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) jobs. The selection committee received strong applications for programs across the country that are all striving to provide high-quality, middle-skill education in STEM fields.

The Health Information Technology program was among the top performers in three primary performance categories: achieving excellent student outcomes, supporting economic growth and advancing social mobility.

Excellence Rewarded

Two MDC students, Marqia Black and Merlyn Santana, will also receive scholarships of at least $3,500 to continue their education or pay existing student loan debt, though very few students from MDC, less than 10 percent, have any loan debt. Technical Scholars Program is part of the Siemens Foundation’s new multimillion dollar initiative to help bridge the opportunity gap for young adults in the U.S. and enable them to develop STEM skills.
