Former MDC star Mike Piazza was recently voted into the Baseball Hall of Fame – the greatest honor that can be bestowed upon a baseball player.

He will be inducted on July 24 with a ceremony in Cooperstown, New York.

Piazza, who was a catcher in the major leagues, played first base for Miami Dade North, hitting .364 with three homers and 23 RBI in 29 games for the 1988 Falcons.

He was drafted in the 62nd round – 1,389 players were selected ahead of him – yet he became the National League Rookie of the Year in 1993 and a 12-time All-Star, playing primarily for the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets.

Piazza, who is also an MDC Hall of Famer, is known as the greatest hitting catcher in baseball history. He won 10 Silver Slugger awards, given annually to the best hitter at his position. He also holds the major-league record for most homers by a catcher – 427.
