Applause From the NEA

MDC Live Arts recently received a generous award from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) to continue its stellar programming. The Art Works Award will be applied to MDC Live Arts’ 2016-17 season, an ever-eclectic lineup of performances and events. The grant more specifically supports the Live Arts Mundo series, which offers a rich, diverse mix of shows and genres from around the globe.

A passport to global citizenship, Mundo has featured wide-ranging works this season, including underground dance from Argentina and Cuban-American jazz legend Paquito D’Rivera. Yet to come on April 16 is Teatro Cinema, a wildly inventive Chilean theater group. Past years have showcased performances by a Congolese hip-hop star, a stunning Rajasthani concert, theater from Scotland, a Jewish-Yemeni funk band, a Pan-African jam session and more. Next year’s lineup promises even more of the diversity and adventure that has earned MDC Live its star reputation.

“We are thankful to receive this funding from the NEA for Live Arts Mundo, which allows us to create global connections, broaden knowledge of diverse cultures and bring international perspective to students and the community,” said MDC Live Arts Executive Director Kathryn Garcia.

“The arts are part of our everyday lives – no matter who you are or where you live,” said NEA Chair Jane Chu. “They have the power to transform individuals, spark economic vibrancy in communities and transcend the boundaries across diverse sectors of society. Supporting projects like the one from MDC Live Arts offers more opportunities to engage in the arts every day.”
