Ringing in the Year of the Monkey

Dragons, drummers, dancers and a bevy of other exquisite artists descended on MDC’s campuses to bring the Chinese New Year to life earlier this semester when the College’s Confucius Institute celebrated the Year of the Monkey with an array of cultural and educational events throughout the month of February. Providing cultural enrichment opportunities for all South Florida residents, the Institute this year presented its most extensive, colorful celebration in MDC’s history, enriching the lives of students, faculty, staff and members of the surrounding communities.

This year’s highlights featured both traditional and contemporary Chinese performing arts, including Chinese fan dances, Tibetan dance, instrumental music with Chinese violins and flutes, and both folk and pop songs performed by Chinese singers. In addition, participants were treated to Tai Chi and calligraphy demonstrations. MDC students studying the Chinese language joined the celebration by presenting international fashion shows. The Confucius Institute also provided outreach resources in global education to assist students in obtaining scholarships for study abroad programs in China.
