Saying Yes to Success

Miami Dade College is committed to building self-confidence and a sense of empowerment among the next generation of innovators, leaders and change makers through a variety of initiatives.

As part of one of its most recent events, MDC welcomed 50 outstanding high school juniors and seniors from Edison and Southridge high schools and the Mexican-American Council for a daylong leadership development workshop and academic expo as part of the national Say Yes to the Prom initiative by the TLC network of Discovery Communications.

Miami is one of five cities participating in the event, in which 300 deserving students were selected to take part in the program that removes the financial burden of a prom. But the initiative goes well beyond just dresses and tuxedos – it helps inspire confidence among young people, providing them the foundation to pursue their passions and find success in whatever they do. Education partners like MDC help make the event even more impactful.

During their visit to the College, the Say Yes to the Prom high school students from Miami had an opportunity to learn about the college and its programs, tour its state-of-the-art facilities and interact with MDC students during an empowering panel discussion.

The students were also treated to an inspirational presentation by Dr. Lenore Rodicio, MDC’s provost for academic and student affairs, who spoke about the power of opportunity.

“It’s about making a meaningful change in your life or the life of someone you know, and using your time, talent and your treasure,” she said. “You can attain all of your dreams.”

A one-hour Say Yes to the Prom special chronicling the initiative will air on TLC on May 20.
