NWSA Jazzed Up About Ellington Win

The New World School of the Arts High School Jazz Ensemble at Miami Dade College took home the first place trophy during the Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition in New York City.

More than 100 high school bands nationwide entered the annual competition by submitting a recorded performance of three compositions. Finalists were then selected through a rigorous screening process.

The 25-member Jazz Ensemble also got a total of 11 recognitions in various categories during the competition awards ceremony. In addition to their first place trophy, NWSA received a $5,000 cash award.

Created by the Florida Legislature as a center of excellence in the performing and visual arts, New World School of the Arts is a shining example of the exceptional educational partnership of Miami-Dade County Public Schools, Miami Dade College and the University of Florida.
