About The Falcon Times

Welcome to the online version of The Falcon Times the award-winning student newspaper at Miami Dade College’s North Campus. The paper traces its existence to 1961 and has garnered eight Pacemakers during that time. 

The Pacemaker is the highest journalistic honor that can be earned by student publications. Former student reporters of The Falcon Times have gone on to work for prestigious news organizations such as the Dallas Morning News, Newsday, The Miami Herald, The Palm Beach Post, The OrlandoSentinel, WSVN 7 and WPLG Local 10 among others.

The Falcon Times is free and is published bi-weekly. It seeks to provide information for the students, faculty, staff, and the community, and to provide a public forum for ideas, as guaranteed in the First Amendment of the Constitution.

Manolo Barco, 38, is entering his fifth year as media adviser to Miami Dade College’s student newspaper. He will serve as the adviser to The Reporter during its inaugural year. Barco has worked as a criminal justice reporter at the Dallas Morning News in Texas and as a staff writer at the Miami Herald. His work has also appeared on the sports pages of the South Florida Sun Sentinel. A graduate of Florida International University and Miami Dade College’s North Campus, Barco served as editor-in-chief of the now-defunct Falcon Times in 1994.

Monique O. Madan, 19, is a journalism and mass communications major in the Honors College at the North Campus.  She will serve her second term as editor-in-chief of The Reporter during the 2011-12 school year. Madan, a 2010 graduate of Miami Coral Park Senior High School, is currently an online news producer for El Nuevo Herald. Lazaro Gamio, 21, is an Electronic Media Major at New World School of the Arts. He will serve as Managing Editor for The Reporter during the 2011-12 school year.  Gamio, a 2007 graduate of the Design and Architecture Senior High School, is currently a freelance graphic designer for The Miami Herald. De Armas has interned at NBC6 and Univision 23. She is a 2009 graduate of Our Lady of Lourdes Academy in Pinecrest and is attending the North Campus Honors College.

Akeem Mayers, 20, is a graphic design major at the North Campus. Mayers will serve as cartoonist for The Reporter during the 2011-12 school year. Mayers was born in Trinidad and migrated to the United States at the age of 10.  He aspires for a career making graphics for electronics and vehicles. Mayers also has a passion for drawing comics, and hopes to publish a comic book in the future.

Theo Karantsalis, 47, is an assistant library director at Miami Dade College. He is a news writer for The Reporterduring the 2010-11 school year while taking several journalism courses at the North Campus. Karantsalis is also a freelance writer for the Miami Herald and the River Cities Gazette in Miami Springs.  He teaches several library research courses at the college.

Rebeka Silva, 20, served as editor-in-chief of The Falcon Times during the 2009-2010 school year.  Silva, a 2008 graduate of Coral Springs High School in Broward County, interned at Telemundo this past summer serving mainly as a production assistant at mun2, a program aimed at young Hispanics. She will be attending Fordham University this fall.




Michael Finch

Michael Finch II, 22, served as the news editor for The Falcon Times for the 2009-10 school year.  Finch, a graduate of Miami Central Senior High School, has interned at the Biscayne Times and is currently a freelance writer for the Miami Herald.  He will be attending Florida International University this fall.

Jeannie Rodriguez, 20, served as the features editor for The Falcon Times for the 2009-10 school year.  Rodriguez, a 2008 Mater Academy Charter High School graduate, has freelanced for the Miami Herald. She will be attending Emerson College this fall.




Sergio Candido

Sergio N. Candido, 22, served as the multimedia editor and a news writer for The Falcon Times for the 2009-10 school year. He has interned at Telemundo on the national news desk writing more than 25 stories that were used on air. Candido will be attending Florida Atlantic University this fall.

Monique Dos Anjos, 21, served as the entertainment editor for The Falcon Times for the 2009-10 school year.  Her ultimate goal is to be a writer for Vanity Fair magazine.
