MDC Offers Creative Writing Courses This Spring

This spring, the Florida Center for the Literary Arts will offer creative writing courses from Feb. 1 through March 27 at the Wolfson Campus.

The courses are being taught by writers/teachers with publication records and classroom experience, and will feature courses in speculative fiction and science fiction, creating life stories, and writing a novel.

The FCLA will also have a course called ‘The Novel Step by Step,’ which will be taught in Spanish. Eight different eight week workshops will be offered for $170 each. Discounted rates are available for MDC staff and students currently enrolled in credit courses.

Building 1 under Renovation

North Campus recently installed new skylights in Scott Hall (building 1).

The skylights, which have been up since the opening of the college in 1960, were no longer providing any light. The replacements are part of the college’s sustainability initiative.

Marvin Francisco, director of maintenance at MDC, says the new sky lights will provide natural light and lower energy consumption because they filter out heat from the building.

The sky lights are being funded by the Wind Mitigation Grant. The project should be complete within two weeks. Also, the building will be receiving a new exterior window, interior cement ceiling tiles, and hurricane shutters. All renovations are expected to be complete within two months.
