It’s October, which means..
National Cyber Awareness Month!
Sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security, the theme of 2009 is “Our Shared Responsibility” to reinforce the message that all computer users, have a responsibility to practice good “cyber hygiene” and to protect themselves and their families at home, at work and at school. Follow a few simple steps to keep yourself safe online to keep your personal assets and information secure |
- Have anti‐virus software and firewalls installed, properly configured, and up‐to‐date.
Set your computer to automatically update for you. New threats are discovered daily. - Update your operating system and critical program software.
Turn on automatic updating if that feature is available. - Backup key files.
Copy important files stored on your computer onto a removable disc and store in a
safe place.
Help protect yourself against rogue security software
Rogue security software AKA "scareware" produces fake security warnings which might appear as you surf the Web. These warnings are designed to trick you into downloading malicious software. For more information, see Watch out for fake alerts
