Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, ’72 has a passion for education that was nurtured at MDC. After completing the A.A., she continued her studies through to the doctorate in higher education. In 1982 she became the first Hispanic woman to join the Florida House of Representatives. Four years later, she was elected to the Florida Senate. Ros-Lehtinen has served in the U.S. House of Representatives since 1989. The first Hispanic woman in the Congress, she is a strong national leader fighting to advance the needs of South Florida while ensuring the continued prosperity of the nation. Recently she joined actor Wilmer Valderrama (That ‘70s Show) and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute at MDC for Ready to Lead, a college readiness program for Hispanic youths.
