Miami Dade College to Create Partnership for Study Abroad Program in Indonesia

The U.S. Department of State, through the Institute of International Education, recently awarded Miami Dade College (MDC) a grant to launch a U.S.-Indonesia Partnership Program for Study Abroad Capacity (USIPP). MDC is the only community college among six U.S. institutions selected to receive the grant and collaborate with six Indonesian institutions to develop study abroad programs.

Gloria Estefan Designates Miami Dade College to Receive Merage Foundation for the American Dream Student Scholarship

Recently, the Merage Foundation for the American Dream honored Gloria Estefan with its 2010 National Leadership Award. Honorees receiving this distinction were then asked to select a college where an immigrant student will receive a special plaque and a $5,000 scholarship. Estefan chose Miami Dade College.

MDC to Educate Community about Genocide with New Class and Community Outreach Program

A Miami Dade College (MDC) professor hopes that by educating both children and adults about the Holocaust and other genocide events throughout history, the lesson will make the community a better place to live and help create responsible global citizens. Since 2005, Randall Kaufman, department chair of Arts and Sciences at MDC’s Homestead Campus, has successfully led a community outreach program to increase awareness on the topic of genocide.

Miami Dade College to Offer Accelerated Associate Degree Programs

Beginning this fall, Miami Dade College (MDC) will offer two new degree programs for self-motivated individuals who enjoy learning in a fast-paced environment. The College’s new accelerated associate degree programs, Computer Information Technology (CIT) (A.S.) and Business Administration (A.A.), will both be offered at the Wolfson Campus in downtown Miami when classes resume for the fall semester on Monday, August 23, 2010.

MDC’s Lynn and Louis Wolfson II Florida Moving Image Archives Receives Large Donation from Local Producer

A large videotape donation has been made to Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Lynn and Louis Wolfson II Florida Moving Image Archives by veteran producer Barrie Brett. Brett’s extensive background in the media allowed her to accumulate a wealth of footage highlighting South Florida’s heritage. The 330 tapes join a collection that contains millions of feet of film and thousands of hours of videotape, spanning over nine decades of Florida’s past.

MDC Advancing Green Jobs Training in South Florida with Solar Panel Installation Course

The growing demand for green jobs to create a more sustainable future has prompted training in solar, wind, biomass, hydrogen, and fuel cell industries, among other areas. To this end, Miami Dade College’s Green Technology Institute at the North Campus is offering courses on Photovoltaic Design and Installation, or solar electric training (panel installation). MDC is one of the few institutions in South Florida offering this training.

Cambridge University Press Invites Miami Dade College to Collaborate on Foreign Languages Project

Miami Dade College’s (MDC) diverse student body and foreign languages curriculum has recently drawn the attention of Cambridge University Press, the publishing arm of the University of Cambridge. Officials from Cambridge University Press visited MDC earlier this summer as part of its research for an upcoming foreign languages project. So far, MDC is the only US institution approached by Cambridge.

Miami Dade College Awarded $600,000 Service Learning Grant

Miami Dade College recently received a Learn and Serve Higher Education service-learning grant in the amount of $559,000 from the Corporation for National and Community Service under its Learn and Serve America Higher Education program to engage current and future teachers in service-learning. The grant will help increase student achievement and give teachers the opportunity to use service as an educational tool.

Mentors Wanted! Take Stock in Children is making an appeal for new mentors to help guide students throughout Miami-Dade County Public Schools.

Take Stock in Children (TSIC), a renowned mentoring program housed at Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Wolfson Campus, is making an appeal for new mentors to join the team providing hope and guidance to students throughout Miami-Dade County Public Schools (MDCPS). This fall more than 60 new scholars will enter the program and cannot do so without a committed volunteer mentor.
