Speaker Series

Miami, Tuesday, July 15, 2008 - Miami Dade College’s (MDC) popular Journalism Speaker Series wraps up its first season with two South Florida stars – Nathalie Rodriguez, news anchor for Newsradio 610 WIOD, and Jaweed Kaleem, features reporter for The Miami Herald. The two presenters will speak at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, July 22, at the North Campus, 11380 N.W. 27 Ave., Room 4207. This event is free and open to the public.

Rodriguez began working her way up the ranks as an intern at WIOD, formerly 940 WINZ, more than a decade ago. Today, you can hear her on “South Florida’s First News” and “The Footy Show.” If you’re an FM radio listener, she delivers up-to-the-minute newscast on Love 94 and The Beat during morning hours. Rodriguez worked in Okinawa, Japan, as a news writer and assistant producer for the Armed Forces Radio and Television Service. In the mid 1990s, she interned at 820 AM WTOP in Washington, D.C., before returning to her “home” at WIOD. Rodriguez is a member of The National Association of Hispanic Journalists and MDC Honors College alumna.

At 23 years old, Kaleem’s feature stories often turn up on The Herald’s front page. He writes about religion, health, entertainment, and cultural stories. Kaleem earned a degree in writing, literature and publishing from Emerson College in May 2007. Throughout college, he gained experience working as an intern at the Knight Ridder Washington Bureau, Lexington Herald-Leader, Detroit Free Press, and San Jose Mercury News.

The Speaker Series is organized by Manolo Barco, media adviser to the student newspapers at North Campus (The Falcon Times) and Wolfson Campus (Metropolis); and Cindy Irizarry, TV producer for MDC in Focus.
